Nine Departments Answer Tire Fire Alarm
A stubborn tire fire that threatened to become a large grass fire was extinguished along IH-10 East in Schertz Friday through the cooperation of nine emergency services departments.
The fire, which apparently started in a pile of tires, was reported around 3:30 PM on the north side of IH-10 East between FM 1518 and Trainer Hale Road. The Schertz Fire Department responded and soon after eight other departments rolled into action to help.
Those were: Converse FD, Cibolo FD, Schertz EMS, St. Hedwig FD, China Grove FD, Gardendale FD, Randolph AFB FD (which sent an off road tanker truck) and the Bexar County Fire Marshal Office.
The 5-acre fire was finally contained between 5:30 and 6:00 PM, according to Schertz Fire Chief David Covington. He said the response was a good example of the value of mutual assistance agreements between cities.
