Do to increasing disposal and labor costs, the Schertz City Council approved a request by Bexar Waste to increase garbage rates beginning May 1, 2009. Bexar Waste President Henry Gutierrez explained to city officials that the requested increase over the contractual rate mirrored the most current Consumer Price Index change nationally of 3.84%. Added to the aforementioned CPI change, Bexar Waste informed council members that they had significant, exorbitant, and unprecedented increases at both landfills they utilize, BFI-Tessman Road in San Antonio and Beck Landfill in Schertz during the past year; however, Bexar Waste agreed to absorb those increases during 2009. In addition to severe disposal costs, Bexar Waste continues to experience extremely high prices on new trucks, truck parts and support equipment, tires, insurances and in operational costs over all. The new rate, which will first appear on statements beginning June 1st, remain very competitive and in most cases are less than other Metrocom cities. |
