With summer quickly approaching many families will be traveling out of town on vacation. Before leaving for your vacation destination residents are reminded to take some steps to ensure their home is secure. - Ensure your home has properly installed locks on all doors and windows. If you have an alarm use it.
- Do not allow your mail, newspapers or packages to pile up, have those services hold your mail, newspapers or packages. If that is not possible then ask a trusted neighbor to collect the items so that the home does not appear to be unoccupied.
- Tell a trusted neighbor or local family member when you’re out of town. If possible ask that neighbor to park their vehicle in your driveway.
- Install a timer which can switch lights and radios/TV on at different times and intervals. (Timers can be purchased at most hardware stores). Also turn your phone ringer down, a ringing telephone can give the impression that nobody is home if it continues to ring. Outside lighting is helpful, burglars like the cover of darkness.
- Stop the Schertz Police Department and complete an out of town check, ensure that you provide good contact numbers for yourself as well as a local family member or neighbor in the event you need to be contacted.
- Most importantly be safe while on vacation arrive alive both to and from!
