The Schertz Fire/ Rescue Department was formed in 1956 as an all volunteer department by 12 local business men. They named Archie Woodward as their first Fire Chief. In 1959 the first fire truck was purchased, 1956 Ford Pumper. In 1970 the second fire truck, an 1970 International Pumper was purchased. In 1975 Archie Woodward was named the first part-time Fire Chief and became the first full-time Fire Chief in 1980. In 1982 Archie Woodward retired, and Edward Melton was named Fire Chief. In 1985 the first full time fire fighter was hired to work from 8 to 5. In 1986 two additional fire fighters were hired and duty shifts were from7 am to 3 pm, and 3pm to 11pm. 11 pm to 7 am was primarily covered by the volunteers. In 1991 Edward Melton retired and Johnny Woodward was named Fire Chief. In 1993 the department went to the current 24/48 schedule. In 2000 the current station was completed and the department moved in April of that year. In 2001 Johnny Woodward retired and on March 11, 2002 Elroy Friesenhahn was named Fire Chief. July of 2005 The City of Schertz opened one of its newest addition. This building is called Emergency Services Building #2. It houses Schertz Fire Dept. and Schertz EMS. The newest addition to the Fire Dept Fleet is a 2007 Spartan/Ferrara Engine.
