Schertz Watering Guidelines

Schertz receives its water from the Carrizo Aquifer, not through the Edwards Aquifer Authority. The Carrizo Aquifer is NOT under Stage 1, 2, 3, or 4 restrictions. Schertz promotes a year-round water conservation plan, the rules are as follows:
- Year round outdoor sprinkler watering is prohibited between 10:00 am - 8:00 pm daily. The use of a handheld hose or other handheld watering device or a drip irrigation system can be used at any time.
- It shall be a violation if a person or customer allows water to run off into a non-pervious ditch, or fails to repair a controllable leak.
- Re-use water usage is exempt from the water conservation plan.
- Customers using water from a private water well must comply with all requirements of the water conservation plan.
- All persons are urged not to waste water.
As this dry season continues, be prepared for restictions to be placed. Be water-wise.
When is Water Pressure to High or to Low?
The City of Schertz
Water Department is regulated by the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The TCEQ rules state "the
system must be designed to maintain a minimum pressure of
35 psi at all points within the distribution network at flow
rates of at least 1.5 gallons per minute per connection".
The deviation in elevation throughout Schertz's water service
area makes it impossible to maintain one constant pressure
zone for our customers. Higher elevations will tend to
have lower water pressures and lower elevations toward
higher pressures. The Schertz water system is designed
to provide a minimum of 750 gpm fire hydrant flow and insuring
that we meet the minimum water pressure requirements. It
is important to know that the Texas/Schertz plumbing/building
code requires a pressure reducing valve to be installed
when water pressures at the residence exceeds 80psi.. Although
the working pressures of house plumbing and appliances
exceed 80psi, some insurance companies will not cover any
damages or replacement of an appliance if this situation
exists. It is important for you to know what your insurance
provider requires/will cover. If you have any questions
concerning the water pressures in Schertz, contact the
Schertz Water Department at (210) 619-1100. To find out
what your insurance companies rules are about coverage
to damage to, or replacement of an appliance, you should
contact them directly.
FEMA INFORMATION
Flood Insurance Study Report and Insurance
Rate Map to Take Effect
The City of Schertz has received a Letter of Final Determination
dated May 2, 2007 from the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA). This establishes the date, six months after
the letter, when the Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report
and Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) for our community
will become effective on November 2, 2007. The six-month
interval allows the City of Schertz to adopt the final
FEMA approved floodplain maps with the necessary ordinances.
By adopting the new maps, the City of Schertz will continue
to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program
(NFIP), so that our citizens are eligible to purchase flood
insurance. Please see FEMA Maps 210, 220, 230 and 240 for
more information.
Flood Insurance coverage is available for
a 1-year term. There is a minimum premium for all flood
insurance policies. Because the minimum is subject to change,
anyone interested in purchasing a flood insurance policy
should contact a local property insurance agency or company
that writes flood insurance coverage to obtain the minimum
premium amount.
There is normally a 30-day waiting period
before flood insurance goes into effect. November 2, 2007
is the date that the new FEMA floodplain maps go into effect.
If residents purchase flood insurance prior to the November
2, 2007 effective date, they will be eligible for current
premium rates under the existing maps.
Residents are encouraged
to contact their insurance providers prior to November
2, 2007 in order to make appropriate insurance adjustments.
PROGRAMS
Turn Around ~ Don't Drown

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. Why? The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in automobiles as they are swept downstream. Of these drownings, many are preventable, but too many people continue to drive around the barriers that warn you the road is flooded. Learn more HERE
Fix a Leak
Did you know that an American home can waste, on average, 11,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks? Learn More HERE
