As part of their annual campaign to increase awareness about Schertz area issues, activities, and organizations, members of the Schertz Sweetheart’s Court chose to dedicate their project of the year to “Being Green”.  The idea behind the campaign is to make the community aware about being environmentally friendly, promoting parks and recreational areas, and also to demonstrate how thinking green can help the local economy and be a primary means of raising money for the Sweetheart’s Scholarship program.

Beginning in March, the Sweethearts announced the Sweetheart’s “Go Green” logo contest and encouraged area students to submit logos that would serve as their official logo for the campaign.  Students from all over Schertz submitted their vision of the campaign to the court.  Ultimately 15 logos were judged by the Sweethearts, including several from the Universal City Baptist Academy (read more about their submissions in the article: “Baptist Academy Goes Green”). Ultimately, a logo created by former Sweetheart Kelly Ferguson, a home schooled Schertz Junior, received the nod.

Kelly Ferguson - Logo contest Winner

Ferguson, 17, served as Miss Freedom in 2008 and is active with two different church youth groups.  She participates in Girl Scouts and attends mission trips. Upon graduation in 2010, she plans to attend Harding University in Arkansas.  As the winner of the Sweetheart’s “Go Green” contest, Ferguson won a $200 prize from FiberTech Polymers, the manufacturer of Timberwolf Composite Fencing. Congratulations to Kelly for a job well done!

In addition to the “Go Green” logo contest, the Sweethearts launched their recycled vinyl banner program.  This completely original concept involved taking old advertising banners off of the City of Schertz Billboard at FM 482 and IH-35 and transforming the material into “chic” tote bags that are available for sale as part of their fundraising efforts.   Just over 100 bags were produced and are being sold for $25.00.  100% of the proceeds benefit the Sweetheart’s Scholarship program. Get your limited edition bag at the Schertz Civic Center (1400 Schertz Pkwy, Bldg. #5). There are only 120 bags, so visit us ASAP!!

So, what does “Go Green” mean?  To the Sweetheart’s, it means thinking outside of the box; being conscious and creative.  It also means thinking about the future of Schertz and how to keep our community the best play to live, work, and play in Texas.
