Purpose

The purpose of Schertz Young Leaders is to give students the opportunity to learn about their community on a higher level. They will be introduced to the multiple facets that make up Schertz: Local Government, Education, Community Businesses & Partners, and the Randolph Air Force Base. Participating in this program should increase students’ community awareness and prepare them to make positive impacts in the future.

The program seeks to foster the development of knowledgeable citizens and future leaders of Schertz through in-depth programs that introduce students to the wide variety of opportunities, challenges, and resources available in the City and allow them to interact with community leaders and decision makers.

Schertz Young Leaders is open to all interested high school students (public, private, and home schooled) that reside in Schertz or are in the SCUC Independent School District.

Commitment:

Schertz Young Leaders consists of six (6) mandatory school-day sessions, all of which begin at 9:15 am and end approximately at 3:15 pm as well as an evening graduation in May. Each session will be focused on a particular topic pertaining to the community and will also promote personal growth. Students will hear from and interact with community leaders, tour facilities, and complete a class project. Also required is attendance to one (1) Schertz City Council Meeting, one (1) volunteer event, and one (1) SCUCISD Board Meeting.

Attendance is mandatory for graduation of the program. One (1) excused absence may be permitted pending notification and acceptance by the City of Schertz staff representative, on a case-by-case basis.
