[ARCHIVED] Burn Ban in Effect

The City of Schertz has implemented a burn ban across the City on outdoor burning. In recent days there have been increasingly dry conditions and Schertz Fire has responded to several grass fires within the area. With the dry winds and high heat, the vegetation is drying out and becoming a dangerous situation if a fire was to occur. Residents are advised to use caution with any type of heat source outside.

Schertz Fire Marshal, Thomas Pinder commented, "Burn bans are issued generally when the KDBI is between 500-600, which is our current state. On July 28, 2019, Guadalupe, Bexar, and Comal Counties reached the 400-500 on the KBDI Value, and on August 1, 2019 reaching into the 500-600 range with some areas of the counties in the 600-700 range. Therefore, to protect the residents of Schertz, the Fire Marshal's Office believes it is in the best interest of the public to enact this ban."

Under the burn ban, no open flames are allowed outdoors to include previously permitted controlled burns, trash burning, campfires, and other unattended open flames. Residents are permitted to barbecue with an open flame as long as the grill has a lid and is set off the ground. Welders are encouraged to use a spotter for any outdoor welding and keep a water source nearby.

Surrounding counties to include Bexar, Guadalupe, and Comal have already put burn bans in place. The burn ban will extend until further notice.

If you have any question, please contact the Schertz Fire Department at (210) 619-1300.
