Schertz Parks & Recreation Launches New Nature Education Programs

The City of Schertz Parks & Recreation Department is excited to launch two new Nature Education programs for 2021 to help get little ones engaged in the nature they have right in their backyards! Nature Education Programs are held at Crescent Bend Nature Park located at 12780 Schaefer Rd, Schertz, TX 78154.

EdzoocationNews FlashThe new Schertz Parks & Rec First Ed-ZOO-cation in the Park program kicked off on Saturday, April 17. The San Antonio Zoo Center for Conservation and Research has selected Schertz’s Crescent Bend Nature Park as a harvesting location to help feed their Texas Horned Lizards. This program invites kids and families to learn about the Texas Horned Lizards, carpenter ants, the history of the animals, and their importance. If this program is not already cool enough, there is also an opportunity for appearances of live animals and lizards from the zoo! Gren, the Horned Lizard Detection Canine, will also be in attendance. The program will start at 10:00 a.m. and participants will meet at the 1st Parking lot near the Restroom Building and Trailhead. Upcoming Ed-ZOO-cation in the Park events will be held on July 17 and September 25.

Picture1The new Schertz Parks & Rec Dark Skies & Fireflies program will be held on Saturday, May 29 also at Crescent Bend Nature Park. Local Firefly Expert and founder of Firefly Conservation & Research, Ben Pfeiffer, is partnering with Schertz Parks & Recreation to provide a great fun and educational program for all ages. This program will offer firefly education, and a chance to explore and learn how to carefully catch local fireflies. Don’t forget to bring a chair and a butterfly net. The program will start at 7:00 p.m. and attendees will meet at the 1st Parking lot near the Restroom Building and Trailhead.

Schertz Parks & Rec also hosts Nature Discovery Series programs on the second Saturday each month. The program is designed for families with elementary-aged children, but older and younger siblings are welcome too! Texas Master Naturalist volunteers lead the themed programs held at 10:00 a.m. at Crescent Bend Nature Park.

Why Nature Education? Research shows that children are spending more hours on electronic devices and less time outdoors, with detrimental effects to their health. Getting kids outdoors and learning about the natural world has shown to reduce health risks such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, and ADHD, while fostering the next generation of environmental stewards. So get outdoors as a family and enjoy the nature all around you!
