[ARCHIVED] Nature Discovery Series

Does your little one enjoy being outdoors and searching for creepy crawlies? Do Mom and Dad want to get the family outside more enjoying time together? Then the Nature Discovery Series is for you! The program is designed for families with elementary-aged children, but older and younger siblings are welcome too! Texas Master Naturalist volunteers lead the themed programs which are listed below. 

The program is free, but pre-registration is required. Please call the Parks & Recreation Office to register at (210) 619-1850. Space is limited.


Discover The Forest – Saturday, February 3 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Crescent Bend Nature Park

The forest is a city, too. Children will learn about how a forest functions by identifying how each living organism plays a role in the use of the natural resources in a forest. Children will compare their city life to that of the forest city.


Discover What’s Flying – Saturday, March 3 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Crescent Bend Nature Park

Learning about birds is like solving a mystery! Interpreters teach how to use viewing instruments (Fun’oculars) and introduce six clues for looking at birds: shape, shade, size, sound, surroundings, and speed. You will be amazed at the diversity of bird life right in your backyard!


Discover What’s Buzzing/Blooming – Saturday, April 7 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Crescent Bend Nature Park

Flowers and pollinators help each other. With oversize flower shapes and insect “mouths”, interpreters show shapes of flowers, introduce model bees and butterflies, discussing terms pollen, nectar, pollinator, proboscis and host.


Discover What’s Swimming – Saturday, May 5 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Crescent Bend Nature Park

There's secret life in water. With dip-nets and clear containers, we capture and discuss macroinvertebrates, habitat and food chain. Terms used; upstream, downstream, oxygen, diversity, larva, nymph, adult.
