1. What is graffiti?

Graffiti means any unauthorized inscription, word, letter, figure, symbol, or design that is marked, etched, scratched, drawn, or painted on any exterior structure surface visible from a public place, public right-of-way, or private buildings, structures, or other facilities or upon any other property, regardless of its content or nature and regardless of the nature of the material of the structural component or property. 

2. What should I do if I see someone creating graffiti?

Call 9-1-1 if it is in progress. Once it is completed call 311 or report online.

3. Who is responsible for removing graffiti?

Property owners, both residential and commercial, are responsible for the timely removal of graffiti. Graffiti not only makes our neighborhoods and commercial areas look unattractive, it affects our property values, business sales, and the community’s image. Ignoring graffiti can give the impression that it is acceptable and invites more. 

4. Will the City remove the graffiti for me?

Under certain circumstances, yes! Property owners must sign a graffiti waiver form within 10 days of notification allowing the city to remove or cover, at no charge.   

5. What if I know someone who creates graffiti?

You can report graffiti vandals anonymously to the Police Department at 210-619-1200.  

6. How can I prevent graffiti?

Graffiti is generally a crime of opportunity. Homeowners, property owners and business owners can use a variety of lighting and design to prevent graffiti. Using downward exterior lighting to illuminate dark areas and planting shrubs or trees to reduce access can help. Most importantly taking pride in the area you live in by practicing any of these measures/3 R’s will reduce the crime in our community.   

7. Who else can I report graffiti to?

A number of non-city agencies maintain utilities and other support structures within our City. If you see graffiti on utility boxes, railroad signage or equipment, or highway overpasses below is a list of agencies that will respond:
